WORDS & SCREENSHOTS Marcus Bandy
Memes are awesome! Downhill skateboarding is awesome! Put the two together and: Awesome! Awesome! Recently, there has been an explosion of Instagram accounts launched within the downhill skateboarding community focused on memes and jokes and jabs and stuff targeting the DH industry, other skaters in it, other communities in it, and also Trump sometimes . . . That being said, a couple of these meme/heckle accounts are not new and have been around for a while.
“Who cares?” you ask. I do! “Why?’ you retort. Because I just do! And also because I believe there is no real conversation without a bit of humor slapped in there. I also like memes specifically because they are a manifestation of the DIY mentality & ingenuity embodied in skateboarding itself. Thusly, almost anyone can get down with the meme game regardless of gender, orientation, color, and religion, local, or economic status. Which also means that any asshole with a keyboard can run his or her trap, and oh do they—in droves! Ha ha!
The accompanying screenshots are all from a few of the meme-ish downhill skateboarding Instagram accounts I found while drinking my coffee this morning, and also from a couple I already follow because they meme’d me in the past. Fuck you very much! Midsvan! Ha ha!
I want to make it very clear though, that regardless of me sharing this silliness with you today, I in no way agree or condone the quality or intent of any of these accounts overall. I love silliness however, and joking and heckling too so . . .
But truth be told: a humorist with a longstanding career is rare and what a tall, tightrope it must be to walk atop of (although exhilarating I’m sure!) without ever getting knocked down and destroyed by those whom you target. Skate, Don’t Die!
