Notes Of A Greasy Young Man: West Coast Assault

I arrived in Laguna Beach with a couple other buddies sometime in late July. Earlier that day Fernando Yuppie, my teammate and very good Brazilian friend, landed at LAX. We met in Laguna Beach the same night and instantly knew some epic shit was about to go down throughout the next month. Our plan was the following: skate, film, go to Maryhill, take some photos with this old pro-skater-burnout named Marcus, grease on the bitties of some treasured California beach towns, and go to NorCal to chill with Cliff Coleman. All of the former worked out quite nicely, maybe except for the bitty part. . .
Week 1
was all about getting ready for Maryhill and filming with Fernando. We were mostly in Laguna Beach bombing hills, and chilling with members of the highly notorious LBDR. We were pretty stoked about our trip to Maryhill seeing as Abec 11’s Chris Chaput had gotten a hold of a super O.G. 70s RV called the Bluebird. The crew was: Fernando Yuppie (all-around Brazilian shredder with an arsenal of funny phrases), Roger Jones (a member of LBSG and all-around gromshredder), Chance Gaul (another member of LBSG, also a shredder), Ramon Konighausen (the laid back European), Sarah Vincent (Mom), Erik Skugg (Co-Pilot), Peter Kell (BRO) and Rory Russell (Captain and general regulator of groms). NorCal homie and general ripper Aaron Grulich met us in the Bay on our way up north; Bryn Jones (Abec 11 team rider, member of LBDR, and general rebel) joined us on the way back to Cali. With a crew like that it would be tough not to have some fun. With the bus loaded and everyone chilling on the shag carpet, we were ready to go. Lots of airsoft battles broke out inside the RV, but besides that it was a pretty chill ride up to Maryhill.
Week 2
was spent on the road and at Maryhill. This year’s Maryhill was a major drama-fest for sure. A little girl got shoved over, riders got kicked out of the race (some deserving more than others), a window was damaged and the accused destroyer had to hide from local police the whole night, one man’s teeth were knocked out. It was kinda wack, but ‘ey, it’s skateboarding. Other than that, the skating was great—pretty epic final. Ups to Ramon, Tim Del, and Riley Crone for shredding so hard! After Maryhill we were on our way back to SoCal.
Week 3
was pretty similar to week 1 except this time Fernando and I were granted access to the ultimate grease mobile. James Kelly left for Europe shortly after Maryhill ended and left behind a beater Volvo wagon, so now Fernando and I were rolling in style to any skate sesh in SoCal. This Volvo was a grease beater for sure—the car shitted out on us close to Wheelbase HQ, we didn’t have any money for gas or oil, some dude was nice enough to sponsor the greasemobile. We were soon rollin’. Skating and going to the beach was pretty much on the agenda everyday, which was sick. The cops in Laguna are pretty strict and poor Fernando got stopped a lot for being out late. Even though he’s 18 they totally hassled him. I guess evading the police was also on the menu every day. Ha ha!

Week 4
was all NorCal. Michael Alfuso, Brad Teschner, Fernando Yuppie, and I motored on up HWY 5 for a couple days of filming. The first 2 days were just Fernando and I skating together to make the video “Slide Masters” check out our riding here:
After that was finished up our good friend Aaron from the Block filmed this video for Abec 11:
Also, here’s a video Fernando just put together documenting his time in SoCal:
After both videos were done the Abec guys headed out of town and it was just me and Fernando by ourselves at my house. The week got rowdy—let’s just say it was thoroughly greased. Ha ha! One of the nights Fernando got picked up by a friend from Brazil and was taken to a huge bro-ska concert. He was amped. Skating with Cliff Coleman is always an experience and a treat. Thanks to Comet Skateboards, Abec 11 and Caliber Trucks for making my travels possible.
