Wow! So our old friend Kyle Wester, with the help of the NHS crew, just demolished the world speed record for skateboarding by reaching a speed of 89.41 mph That is so FASTTTTT! Anyway, this is BIG news, but doubly so since there’s an invite-only world record event this weekend being held up in Canada and called the Top Speed Challenge.
Will this new world record take the sails out of this weekend’s event, or simply fuel the fire? We are hoping the latter. Anyway, below is the official NHS statement as well as our exclusive interview with the new Fastest Skateboarder in the World!
On August 29th, 2016, @KyleWesterSkate set out to break the Guinness Fastest Skateboard Speed Downhill record. The previous record was held at 81.17mph/130.63 kph. With the hill conditions just right, Kyle switched out his wheels one last time before making history.
Kyle Wester was able to smash the current record reaching a speed of 89.41 mph/143.89 kph. - NHS
Here’s our exclusive interview with Kyle Wester:
Interview Marcus Bandy & Kyle Wester Photos Connor Welles
Yo dude, so you went how fast? How much faster is that than the existing world record?
Hey Marcus! Crushed it at 89.41mph/143.89kph. The previous record was held at 81.17mph/130.63 kph. So thats 8.24mph faster!
When does this become official?
It was official when I crossed the line haha! My application with Guinness World Records was approved last year and is pending evidence which is being submitted.
How many attempts did it take?
I broke the record on my 1st run but came out with 89.41mph on my 3rd run of the day.
Did you ever eat shit?
Nope. Thankfully.
Who sponsored you doing this?
Thanks to Santa Cruz Skateboards, Bronson Bearings, MOB Grip and Road Rider Wheels.
You’ve been kinda off the radar lately. What have you been up to in general?
Ya buddy living the grown up life. Married my dream girl, skateboarding, riding my bike.
How’s married life? You’re lady is a downhill skater too-do y’all bomb hills together?
Married life is amazing! Mrs Spoky Woky shreds! Been super busy lately but yes we do get out there on the regular to skate.
What’s next now that you’ve set a new world record?
Keep pushing it and see how long it holds!
What are the chances of some one beating your record in Canada this weekend?
Honestly, I’m not sure. Its a pretty big number to beat but I’d love to see someone hit 90mph including myself.
You’re going there too. Ever skated that hill?
Yeah I’m going! Never skated the hill hoping the weather holds… looks pretty steep, stoked to see everyone… it’s been a bit!
With so many splinter groups in downhill skateboarding vying for supremacy, how much shit do you think you are gonna get for doing your speed record on your own? Why not invite others to attempt it with you?
I’m sure there are going to be a few dudes that are going to get fired up, but hey! If someone thinks they can beat it please do! it would stoke me out! 90+ mile per hour on a skateboard is fucking insane. No one was invited because this was my personal attempt at the Guinness World Record.
Erik Lundberg recently claims to have beat the world speed record. Is that true? Is it official? Does he know about you beating it or will this announcement be the first he hears of it?
Yes, it is true that Erik had the record. In my eyes it was official but I’m not sure if Guinness was involved. Having Guinness approve the record is just the cherry on top. This announcement will be the first anyones heard of the new record.
Most importantly, when and how is a world record made official?
What steps have to be taken and what are the standard tools used to make it an official attempt? Lots of paper work, having the right equipment and people involved. Standard tools are a four photo cell timing that must be accurate to at least 1/1000th of a second.
Did anyone in your family ask you not to try it because they were scared for you?
While I was training for the attempt my Dad came out for his first time to spot. That was the one and only time he came said it was to much for him to handle. My family got over worrying about what I do years ago.
Anyway, stoked for you and the new world record. I’m so in awe. You are a psycho! Anyway, hit the Wheelbasers with any last comments, words of stoke, insight, and of course shout outs to the fam.
Thanks Marcus! Stoked on what you dudes do at Wheelbase! Get out there and push your limits! Thanks to my Family and Friends and Sponsors for the continued support!
