The bummer of the summer has arrived! Giants Head Freeride has officially been canceled. The local authorities have noted “extreme fire danger” as the cause of said shutdown. As mentioned in the official press release (found on the Summerland website and quoted at the bottom of this post) some optional dates are available, but the Giants Head page on Facebook tells us event staff will begin issuing refunds as soon as possible. Sadness ensues.
Any further questions can be directed toward the event staff via their official email or through the event page on Facebook.
The official press release is as follows:
The District of Summerland regret to announce that the Giants Head Freeride Longboard competition/school held July 28th thru to August 4th is cancelled due to extreme dry conditions and the risk of wildfire on Giant’s Head Mountain.
Staff assessed the situation and felt this was in the best interest of public and property safety. The Giant’s Head Mountain Park Road has been closed to vehicle traffic since July 18th to limit the risk of person-cause fires.
Fire Chief Glenn Noble advised, “It was a difficult decision but the safety of our citizens and attendees at the event must take a priority”.
Optional dates were given but it is uncertain if the Longboard Competition will be able to reschedule.
