Skateboarding is Everything—it is a paint brush, a weapon, it’s sports, a cozy seat, a shield in battle, it’s weird, it’s cruisin’, it’s a magic-wand, a walking stick, a crutch, a cane, a space ship, a pillow, it’s fitness, it’s a totem, it’s a game, a plaything, a badge of honor, a best friend, a scapegoat, a TV tray, a ladder-to-the-top, a notebook, it’s skill, a canvas, transportation, procrastination, it’s speed, money, a job, art, business, addiction, drugs, God, salvation, mystery, poetry, a pimper’s paradise, a soapbox, a mistress, a wife, The Way, it’s gay, a waste of time, precision, jank, it’s wood, glue, griptape, bolts, bearings, urethane, aluminum, the best decision you’ll ever make, it’s a muse, a race, a trek, a marathon, adventure, a contest, a demo, it’s an attitude, a submarine, exploration, perception, it’s culture, pop, flex, concave, a useless wooden toy, a gateway, a train, karate, speed, an escape, motion, surfing, adventure, balance, it’s “Core”, momentum, danger, pain, pleasure, an antihero, a protagonist, a lifestyle, a window, a door, sex, destruction, creation, fourth-dimensional, a gift, a guide, innocence, lost, ransom, marketing, hype, fluidity, style, it’s tribal, communal, family, The Lone Ranger, profound, goofy, but most importantly it’s hella FUN!

Basically, skateboarding is whatever you want it to be and that’s precisely why it’s so badass and why it continues to grow and thrive. If I were to ascribe a “take home” from this silly little rant it would be this:
No matter how you choose to perceive and participate in skateboarding please make sure the focus remains on having FUN.
A quality person once told be that “a rising tide raises all ships.” Thus far, life and experience have proven this statement to be true. (insert a lotus-bro-pose and add a sun-salutation-shaka for added positive vibrations). Namaskate.

You forgot, “its a passport” its a shovel, its a wok,
Yeah Shabonieus! It’s def all those things. Thanks for the heads up. A curb can also be a back scratcher too! He he!
Wasn’t this article originally proposed by D34DFR3D? I heard his original draft and it sounded extremely similar to Marcus’s article. It would be a really disappointment to see wheelbase mag reduced to ripping of other people’s ideas. Any response from Wheelbase Management would be highly appreciated.
yo Julian, this is Marcus and I would never and will never steal someone’s text or an original idea. ( I just looked again at my column: I guess you could reach way, way out there and assume that I was inspired by Fred’s use of the word “sex” possibly and “forth-dimensional” via Big Dave, but that would be reaching pretty deeply into the darkness, and also negate the fact that these two words are not new in such contexts. Also, there IS a pic of us skating in SF, well, we did that, and actually skated with Big Dave and some of the boys.) Anyway, this was a painful comment to read for many reasons: friends, bros, I work hard, ect. That said, I’ve been doing this skate thing (I’ve also been studying literature, pop culture, and surf culture) for a long, long time and there’s not much that has not already been done. Fact. Please look into this for yourself A vast range of frames, repetitions, themes, outlines, and titles have already been used, and used, and used by so many people, cultures, and subcultures; so be carful who you are pointing fingers at, as there may be a shit-ton of other folks in line behind both the individuals your quick-assumptions are revolved around. Think of how many times the romantic comedy frame has been used: boy meets girl, they fall in love, boy looses girl, then there’s a struggle, and lastly, they are reunited. That last bit is called the “Denouement”. This Romantic comedy frame has been done 1,000s upon 1,000s of times. Another, fact. Anyway, the anonymous internet call-out is so Silverfish/2010. He he! I didn’t have your number! Apology sent =)
Our staff fully endorses your description of skateboarding and we will continue to teach and test our students by these standards. If you are rolling and smiling then you’re doing it right.
Thanks Brothas and Sisters in New Mex. It’s appreciated.
Man, every time I read this it goes straight to my heart. Keep skating, keep smiling
Thanks Rob. Appreciated.
Right in the feels. Love this. Skateboarding is such a hugely misunderstood sport and it’s people like you, writing stuff like this, that’s pushing it in the right direction and setting a rad example.
Thanks Dude! Much appreciated!
