Calling all Artistic Shred-doggies,
We have a new and exciting challenge hitting the streets today—it’s the Wheelbase Board Graphic Challenge! The crew has been working on this puppy for awhile now, and we are excited to finally have it all ready to launch. So here’s the scoop: Skaters from all over the world are invited to send in their best artwork for a chance to have it printed as a board graphic on a limited-edition Comet/Wheelbase freeride deck (see below). We have joined forces with the Comet Skateboards team and collectively designed a radical, new freeride shape. Our choice to work with Comet Skateboards in order to bring you this Graphic Challenge was a simple one—Comet has a long history of working hand-in-hand (see: The FSM Story) with the skate community in order to produce the construction, shapes, and graphics that skaters want to ride. There will only be a total of fifty of this board made, they will be individually numbered, and available for purchase through a very select list of dealers. We have also teamed up with Caliber Trucks and Divine Wheels and they are providing the awesome components for this exclusive new board. All we are missing now is a super-buttery board graphic from you! Come on and get some!
When it’s all said and done, the Wheelbase crew will pick ten of the raddest graphic entries that we receive, we’ll post our top-ten picks on the Wheelbase facebook page, and then let all of our readers vote on which one of those graphics will make it onto the new limited-edition Wheelbase/Comet freeride board.
The winner of the Wheelbase Board Graphic Challenge will not only have their art printed on the limited-edition deck, they will also receive 3 of these unique decks mailed directly to their front door, along with 2 brand new sets of Caliber trucks, 3 sets of Divine wheels, as well as some other Wheelbase goodies. Can you say: “Winning!” The two runners-up will win big as well. See details below.
Anybody and everybody are welcome and encouraged to participate in this Wheelbase Challenge. There is no skill requirement. However, we do ask that you follow all of the submission requirements provided below.
This is the actual limited-edition Comet/Wheelbase shape:
Tail: 3″ from back truck mount holes
Challenge begins November 8th. Challenge ends January 8th.
Here’s how the Challenge works:
I. We are looking for COLORFUL, BOLD, and CREATIVE board graphics. This challenge is designed to be fun and expressive—fully open to your artistic discretion. That said, we will not accept anything hateful or degrading. In order to get the creative juices flowing, we suggest checking out as many other board graphics as you can before getting started.
II. One entry per artist, please.
III. Once you’ve finished your graphic, upload a small version of it (somewhere in the ballpark of 800x400px) to your computer, and then send it to us via the form provided below. Please make sure to fill the form out completely before pressing send. Do not send us your full size art till you are asked for it and confirmed as a top ten contender.
IV. IMPORTANT: The winning art selection is going to be silk screened by hand, interpreted, augmented, optimized, made-to-work, etc. Please make note of the list of things that we can’t do: full color photographs aren’t possible, at least not flesh tones or any kind of color sensitive art that has to be 100% spot-on to look normal. Skin tones in photographs are one of those things that get complicated. However, we know fancy tricks and it should be noted that every project has its individual needs, wants, problems, and hurdles. Also, we’d have a hard time doing anything over 5 colors, but again, we have ways of making things work. We can turn a seven color into a four color—sometimes, with the right techniques, halftones, etc. If you have a question about any of this, hit us up here: Contact Us.
V. Once we get your initial graphic entry we will send you a confirmation email letting you know that we have received it.
VI. Next, the Wheelbase Action Committee (WAC) will check out all of the entries, vote on the top-ten graphics, and then notify the artists either by telepathy or just plain-old email—most likely it’ll be email. At this time we will then post the top ten graphics on the Wheelbase site and Facebook fan page for all the skaters out there to vote on.
VII. If your artwork is chosen as a top-ten finalist, you will then be required to send us your full size artwork. Finalist Art sizing is as follows: It must be big and/or vector. If it’s raster art (bitmap, jpeg, gif, etc) it needs to be 300 dpi and three feet tall. If you cannot provide the full size artwork, you will be disqualified from the Challenge.
VIII. Once the top ten are posted live and have been voted on and the skater’s votes have been tallied, the Wheelbase Board Graphic Challenge will end and the winner and the two runners-up will be officially announced on the site via a Wheelbase Challenge Feature article. At this time, the board will then move into the printing process. Once the boards have been printed and the winners have receive their prizes, we will then offer the remaining 50; limited-edition decks available for purchase through Wheelbase, Comet, Caliber, Muir, and Rip City Skates.
Judging:
We are looking for board graphics that are COLORFUL, BOLD, and CREATIVE. We leave the theme of the art up to you, the artist. We like simple stuff just as much as we like the technical stuff. You are encouraged to have fun with this and really express your individual style. Please consider that the Wheelbase readers are going to be choosing the winning graphic; It makes sense to at least think about the broader taste of the skateboard-world when deciding what you are going to submit, or don’t—it’s really up to you. Do your thing and enjoy the doing.
Prizes:
Winner: 3 limited-edition Wheelbase/Comet decks with the artist’s graphic on it, 2 sets of Caliber trucks, three sets of Divine Wheels, and a sweet Wheelbase care-package.
Runner-up 1: 1 limited edition Wheelbase/Comet deck with the winning artist’s graphic on it, 1 set of Caliber trucks, 1 set of Divine Wheels, and a sweet Wheelbase care-package.
Runner-up 2: 1 limited edition Wheelbase/Comet deck with the winning artist’s graphic on it, and a sweet Wheelbase care-package.

Do you have a Vector image of the shape of the board? I need it to know how much space im working with. Thank you.
Thanks for the question. We are still working out a few last kinks with some riders on the final shape. You can go to cometskateboards.com and check out their Voodoo model. That Voodoo shape is the closest example to the final board. Check that Voodoo out and focus your graphic between the trucks. We hope this helps. We look forward to seeing your creation. Have fun with it. Shralp!
hey when do the pictures have to be in by for the selection of the top 10?
Yo Andrew, thanks for the question. We have not set a deadline for submissions just yet—the sooner the better. Have fun with it. We look forward to seeing your radical creations.
what is in the wheelbas care-package?
Some stickers, tees, a ball of lint, and a Mr. Potato Head.
how big do i have to draw the picture on paper, can i just print out the shape of the board on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper and draw it like that?
Your graphic must be close to the actual size of the board. You can use the template provided by clicking on the board shape image above. Please read the Challenge directions completely. We look forward to seeing your rad design.
Is January 8th, the deadline for submitting an image, or is the whole thing over then, if not, do you guys have a submission deadline, i read through the contest info and i’m still unclear.
The submission deadline is January 8th. Get some!
I was wondering if we are able to include the Comet logo in the design and if so how much freedom do we have in manipulating it?
Thanks
-Jeff
Hey Jeff,
We prefer that you do not add the logos. Of course you can, but we suggest you leave them out. Anyway, we are real excited to see what ya come up with — logos or no logos. Shredlove.
Damn, didn’t see this till after I submitted. Hope it doesn’t hurt me too much. Let me know if you guys need me to remove the logo. Thanks for a great contest!
A small doubt, Art talks for itself, and is deeply self express to each and every individual in many different ways… but was wondering after i send in my artwork, where could i send some info to clarifying a small idea?? just to state where a transparent section would go… as to incorporate the wood like pattern from underneath the board as one with my artwork, so there is no doubts, as to be imagined as such! Cheers

Unfortunately I was unaware that the board design needed to be placed on the above given board template. I sent just a photo of the design in a square image, I am wondering if I need to re-send the image of the design on a board template, or if you will give the photo I have sent in consideration.
Your best bet is to send your submission within the template as that is how the board will be made. We consider them all, but you my have a better chance if you use the template to better realize your intended vision. Stoked!
Ok, will do, thanks very much.
Do I have to design the graphic by hand and upload a photo or I can design it on the computer?
Design it how ever you like. Do your thing and enjoy getting rad. We look forward to see what you come up with.
Got in my submission right before the deadline! Perfect!
Nice!
WoooHooo! I’m so stoked to see what everyone else drew!
