So you’re at a skatepark. Maybe it’s yours, maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s in a small town with no stairsets, no drained pools and no hills. Anyway, you’re bummed on the purportedly meager terrain. So what’re you gonna do? Sit there? Enjoy a grown-up soda while blaming your lack-of-skating on your “bruised heal acting up again”? No way, bro. That’s not how we roll. We’re gonna find something to skate —perhaps something that the man says “shouldn’t be skated” — and skate it. Oh, hey, look — some Jersey Barriers.
That’s kinda how I imagine how the Barrier Kult began. Some dudes bummed on their park offerings with otherwise mad skills on vertical faces. They teamed up with Gullwing Truck Co. to host a “Barrier Contest” during this year’s Whistler Longboard Festival. From the looks of it, the rules were simple: Skate the barrier. Impress us. This video captured that action and features the likes of Deer Man of Dark Woods & Depth Leviathan Dweller (both donning signature ski masks), Casey Morrow and even the Marcus Bandy, editor-in-chief of Wheelbase Magazine, with a blunt fakie around the one-minute -mark. There are definitely more dudes in there, I just couldn’t quite see who was who… Shout’em if you got’em!
Here’s some more contest footage to enjoy while you’re here:
